Abstract
Describes a rumor that has been circulating in France and many other French-speaking countries for almost 10 yrs. Transmitted from hand to hand on a leaflet, the rumor accuses 20 well-known brands of food products of being toxic and producing cancer. Despite all official denials, the rumor continues. The author offers an explanation for why consumers as well as medical doctors and school teachers believe this rumor.
